New Family Portal For Singaporeans

For all you new parents or people who wants to start a family (yes, that's probably you!), a new portal that focuses on families, for increasingly IT-savvy parents, has been launched.

www.family.sg is a one-stop destination for parenting information that will carry news of family-related matters, offer an online channel for parents to air their opinions, and let public agencies keep their fingers on the pulse of what is happening.

It is a joint project between the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports and MediaCorp Publishing's "Family", "Mother & Baby" and "Kids Company" magazines.

Launching it on Friday, Minister of State for Community, Youth and Sports Mrs Yu-Foo Yee Shoon said recent surveys showed clearly more than half of Singaporeans aged above 15 used the Internet, and that inevitably, digital technology had to be used to know instantly what is happening and to stay ahead.

Smart Speeding Sign Shows Your License Plate Number

The M42 is a major British motorway that has a reputation for being a testbed for new roadside technology. It currently has a traffic management scheme that includes sensors for tracking traffic built into the road and variable speed limit signs every 500 meters.

The latest piece of technology tested out during roadworks is a radar-assisted speeding sign that not only flashes when it detects a speeding car, but also displays the license plate number of the same car. Frankly, I'll be shocked! Apparently the public shame (or immediate realization that it could be an automated ticket-writer) that the sign dishes out to speeding motorists is producing some effect, with 50% of drivers slowing down once they see their number is up. Maybe the other half were trying too hard to grab their digicams than slow down. ^_^
